Chapter Twenty-Three

“They’re looking for you. Kim, are you listening?”

Miles’ scooter engine had come up short as he tried to pass a double trailer big rig on the boulevard. He had a large sedan behind him, honking its horn. And the truck next to him had sped up. Miles couldn’t squeeze the accelerator any harder. Finally he waved an apology and let the truck overtake him, but was then almost run into the opposite lane as the sedan passed on his right. The driver signaled her displeasure with a single upturned finger.

“Kim, can you hear me?” Santabutra asked. “Are you there?”

“Yeah. Morning traffic.”

“Where are you?”

“Trying to survive on Seraph’s fine roads. Who’s looking for me?”

“The trauma center has footage of you taking their patient away. So safe to say, both militias want you to find out who she is. That’s the official line. But Sheriff Vaca seems to have put two and two together, and she’s putting the screws to me to share what I know.”

“You know nothing. Tell her that.”

“Thanks a lot. Tell me why I’m putting my pension on the line for you.”

“Because of my winning smile.”

“You’re harboring a key witness to an investigation. They’ve got you assaulting a security guard. And they know I provided access to the trauma center to you. If your friend was there last night and you have her with you, that puts you in company with the most wanted person in Seraph. So cut the arrogant tone.”

He made a turn and found an open lane. “Neither of us wants to see Lucien Khar hurt. This is my best way forward. I can’t share more than that, because right now I don’t even know if what I’m doing will help. But I know the sheriff isn’t going to get this done. And after what I learned, there’s more to this than we understand.”

“Not new news. I can’t help you anymore.”

“Is that why you’re calling?”

She hesitated before answering. “I called to tell you one last time to be careful.”
